Iron deficiency is a condition whereby the body is deficient in iron, the component of hemoglobin that attaches itself to oxygen in order for it to be transported to vital organs in the body. With low levels of Iron in the blood, the amount of oxygen transported would be decreased leading to organ malfunction. Some symptoms of Iron deficiency include fatigue, irritability, overall pallor and decreased mental alertness.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent nutritional disorder in the world and women are most susceptible due to their monthly menstrual cycle.

A study conducted on Filipino women revealed that the average menstrual loss of iron is approximately 0.55mg/day and the condition is aggravated by low Iron intakes. Pregnant women who are in their third trimester are also at risk as that is the time where the fetus starts to draw iron from the mother for storage. If Iron stores are low in the mother, the fetus will get insufficient iron and it may affect proper fetal cognitive development.

Who is likely to be deficient?
Vegetarians eat less iron than non-vegetarians, and the iron they eat is somewhat less absorbable. As a result, vegetarians are more likely to have reduced iron stores.1 However, iron deficiency is not usually caused by a lack of iron in the diet alone. An underlying cause, such as iron loss in menstrual blood, often exists.

Pregnant women, marathon runners, people who take aspirin, and those who have parasitic infections, hemorrhoids, ulcers, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, gastrointestinal cancers, or other conditions that cause blood loss or malabsorption are likely to become deficient.

Deficiencies of Vitamin B6, B12 and Folic acid can lead to anemia

A Vitamin B complex made up of four types of vitamins namely; Thiamine, Folic Acid, Cyancobalamin and Pyridoxine. B Vitamins are like Betaine, their function is to lower the homocysteine levels in our blood to decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

Folic Acid is especially important during pregnancy as a mother who is deficient in this vitamin will be most likely to give birth to a child with a neurological birth defect; Spina Bifida. A deficiency in Folic Acid also increases one’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease during the golden years and is also linked to depression.

Vitamin C- Iron Absorption Enhancer

Vitamin C is known for its many properties that are beneficial to our health. Besides being an anti-oxidant and an immune system protector, Vitamin C is also involved in the formation of red blood cells. Iron in food exist in the ferrous sulfide form which cannot be absorbed by the body thus Vitamin C is needed to convert the iron into the ferrous sulfate form in order for absorption. With higher intakes of Vitamin C, the absorption of Iron will increase. Thus a deficiency in Vitamin C will result in decreased absorption, increasing the risk of Iron deficiency anemia.

Other Ingredients in Ultra HemoShield™

Betaine: It is a vegetable concentrate which can be found in beets, broccoli and spinach. It is known for its ability to lower homocysteine levels in blood thus decreasing one’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Betaine is also said to be able to protect the liver from fatty deposits due to chronic alcohol use, protein malnutrition, obesity or poor management of diabetes condition.

Bilberry juice concentrate: A very rich source for both Vitamins A and C. Vitamin C is known for its anti-oxidant properties that help to fight free radical damage and prevent cancer while Vitamin A is good for improving eyesight and preventing night blindness. Citrus Bioflavonoids: Sometimes referred to as Vitamin P as they possess the properties of a vitamin. They are usually derived from fruits and vegetables and also help to intensify the effects of Vitamin C in the body. Citrus Bioflavonoids also possess anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy properties that are beneficial to health.

Acerola juice concentrate: It is a very rich source of Vitamin C. It contains up to three times more Vitamin C than oranges. Together with citrus bioflavonoids, they work synergistically to boost the effectiveness of Vitamin C particularly to maintain vascular structure and healthy skin.

Lycopene concentrate: A naturally occurring plant pigment found in tomatoes that is said to possess anti-oxidant properties that help prevent free radical damage that may lead to certain types of cancer namely; prostate, pancreas and stomach cancer.
